Northern Petroleum delighted the market with news that its wholly-owned Netherlands subsidiary would shortly exercise its exploration rights over three oil and gas wells in the Netherlands under an agreement it has with NAM. The news took the total number of discoveries under Northern's umbrella to five. Under the agreement it has with NAM, a company jointly owned by Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil Corp, Northern will also farm-in to an onshore exploration part-area, in the Andel II licence, agreeing to a two-month extension to its option. Investors delighted in the news, as Northern reiterated that it estimated the volumes of the identified oil and gas prospects within the Andel II part area to be between 55-130 billion cubic feet of gas and 62-148 million barrels of oil. The shares finished 8p higher at 51.5p.

"...The prize here could be significant, with some previously mapped leads and prospects showing the potential to hold more than one billion barrels of recoverable oil. Hardman, which has already proved its exploration credentials offshore Mauritania, is excited by this blue-sky exploration project - one that could also prove material to Northern Petroleum, which has a 1.25 per cent stake in the venture. It may not be a big holding but 1.25 per cent of one billion barrels is not to be sniffed at."

"...Shares in Northern Petroleum added 3.5p to 37.5p after Tom Winnifrith of t1ps.com upgraded his stance on the stock to "buy" from "hold." The shares were first recommended on the UK's premier tipping site at 13.75p and Tom advised investors to top slice at 53.75p. Other tipsters piled in and the shares jumped to 99p, before slumping back to 34p."

"...Shares in Ascent Resources were on the rise after the Aim-listed said it had bought a 50% interest in the Huermeces, Valderredible and Basconcillos-H exploration permits in Spain's Sedano basin from Northern Petroleum. Swedish group Tethys Oil holds the other 50%. Northern will receive a 2.5% overriding royalty on any future production. Shares in Ascent rose 2p to 13.5p and Northern Petroleum shares added 0.5p to 64.5p..."

UK-Analyst.com, 25 August 2005

"...Northern actually has assets across several countries. We estimate its Dutch assets could be worth 40 million pounds, its Italian assets up to 20 million pounds, a small stake in a Guyane prospect another 15 million pounds, it has cash of 5 million pounds and Spanish assets worth 2 million pounds. It has a stake in the Avington Field in Hampshire worth at least 4 million pounds and so even if the IoW is a write-off this stock is cheap. we think the market has called the IoW wrong and further drilling could prove this up within days..."

UK Onshore Oil And Gas: A Minnow In Production But A Good Antidote For Investors To More Adventurous Upstream Activities In Frontier Areas

...One company building a position onshore UK is Northern Petroleum. The company hopes to spud its Sandhills-2 well on the Isle of Wight late this month. The well was drilled by BG in 1982, but was plugged and abandoned as unworkable. The Isle of Wight activities are being closely watched by industry as a number of companies have farm-in agreements. Northern’s anticipated drilling activity follows some rig-related delays, an unfortunate side effect of the increasing activity in the sector...

MedOil Hopes Prospecting Licence Will Crack The Louza Nut Offshore Tunisia

... Northern Petroleum spin-off ATI Oil are busy in Italy while Melrose Resources recently signed up to explore in the Gulf of Lyon off the French Mediterranean coastline. The Med has seen little activity in recent decades but that appears to be changing: new seismic and drilling techniques could unlock previously neglected deposits while high oil prices and easy access to energy-hungry markets make this an attractive place to operate. The onshore opportunities, particularly in proven plays such as Italy’s Po Valley or Algeria’s prolific Berkine Basin, can hold projects with company-making potential...

Shares in Northern Petroleum added 0.125p to 9.75p after the company said that 2 Italian licences, of which it is operator, had been granted by decrees following acceptance of the required environmental impact studies. Northern holds a 69.3% beneficial interest in these licences through its holdings in NPUK and ATI Oil (unchanged at 7.75p) its 50% partner in Italy. Top share tipping site t1ps.com, which first recommended the shares at 2.75p (and advised top slicing at 10.5p recently), rated the shares a "hold."
